| St. Florian Anniversary Events The Story of a Landmark For 80 years St. Florian church has stood majestically over the city of Hamtramck. It’s been a part of the landscape for so long that overlooked is its rich history and landmark status as a premier example of Gothic architecture in America. Its designer, Ralph Adams Cram, is known as one of the nation’s greatest, although nearly unknown, architects and was responsible for popularizing Gothic architecture in America . While Cram is gone, his firm remains. HDB/Cram and Ferguson , headquartered in Boston , continues to design many of the great church buildings being erected today across the country. All are true to the spirit of Cram. What inspired Cram and made his work so important? You can learn that at a special presentation by Ethan Anthony, president of HDB/Cram and Ferguson, at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at St. Florian Church. HDB/Cram and Ferguson is the successor to the firm that Cram founded in 1889. Anthony is the author of “The Architecture of Ralph Adams Cram and His Office.” Using photos from the firm’s archives, Anthony will tell the fascinating story of Cram and the relevancy of his idea as they relate to our time. St. Florian Church, which was dedicated in 1928, is considered as one of Cram’s finest works and won the American Architect Award in 1929. It was designed by Cram to stand in sharp contrast to the smokestacks that surrounded it in the once heavily industrial area. Even today it makes a dramatic architectural statement nestled in the surrounding tightly packed urban neighborhood. It reflects Cram’s deep appreciation of classic ideals as well as his disdain for the industrial landscape that came to dominate many American cities in the early years of the 20th century. Anthony’s presentation, part of St. Florian Parish’s 100th anniversary celebration, will follow the 4 p.m. Mass in the church. ST. FLORIAN ORGAN CONCERT As part of our centennial year celebration, we will enjoy an organ concert on April 13, 2008, at 3:00 pm. At this event, Fr. Mirosław Frankowski will rededicate our 1928 Austin Organ. The restoration of our organ is in progress with a plan in place to finish by the anniversary Mass in November, 2008. Our concert will be performed by organist Stephanie Nofar. Stephanie Nofar has earned a Masters degree in music from the University of Michigan. She is organist at Assumption Grotto Church. She comes from a musical family. She is the third of five sisters who sing and play the piano and organ. Stephanie Nofar is currently releasing a recording of organ music through Grotto Productions. We have asked her to play pieces that will demonstrate the restored colors of our organ. Even if we are new to classical organ music, we will be able to enjoy the mountains and rivers of sounds that she will call forth from our church organ. Our organ concert will be free of charge, and all are invited. A reception will follow in the church hall. Please spread the news. Daniel Misteravich, Music Director |
